GORE-TEX jackets can be waterproof if they are marked with a black label saying “GUARANTEED TO KEEP YOU DRY™” as they are designed to be waterproof, windproof and breathable in a wide range of weather conditions. GORE-TEX jackets marked with a white label saying “GORE-TEX INFINIUM™” are not fully waterproof but will offer water-resistance with increased comfort and breathability.
The first step to washing a waterproof jacket is to check the label to ensure that it can be machine-washed.  Make sure to clean out the pockets of any items and take off any removable items like hoods, straps, zipper pulls or other connective devices. Next place your jackets in your washing machine with waterproofing detergent, closely follow the directions provided on the bottle and use the gentle cycle with cold or lukewarm water. Remove your jacket and shake off any excess water before hanging to air dry.
Waterproof jackets maintain their water-repelling qualities for an average of 3-5 years and potentially up to 10+ years depending on how often they are used, types of weather conditions and how they are cared for. Waterproof jackets use a Durable Water-Repellent (DWR) finish that is hydrophobic and causes water to roll off while still allowing for breathability. DWR finishes are susceptible to normal wear & tear, harsh chemicals and environmental exposure so they should ideally be reapplied every year to ensure true waterproof capabilities.
