Soccer is one of Jamaica’s most popular sports, and has been so for more than a century. The first soccer team was founded by the Kingston Cricket Club in 1893, and by 1925 a national soccer team was formed.
The Jamaican soccer team are known as the ‘Reggae Boyz’ in homage to the genre of music from the island nation that has taken the world by storm. The name was first used by a group of chanting fans greeting the team at an airport, and it has since stuck.
Jamaica has won the (now defunct) Caribbean Cup six times, and finished as runners up on three occasions, including in the tournament’s final 2017 edition. The competition was played between national teams that are members of the Caribbean Football Union, and has since been replaced by the CONCACAF Nations League.
