HOW TO STYLE THE ADIDAS SAMBA: 5 OUTFITS AND IDEAS

Anyone can pick a sneaker that reflects their personal style, but choosing to switch up your lacing patterns? Now that’s next-level customization. Finding new ways to lace your sneakers is a cool way to change the look and feel of your shoe, making it uniquely your own. For an extra pop, swap your laces for a different color that makes your lacing stand out even more. Whether you’re looking to lace up Sambas, Stan Smiths or Superstars, here you’ll find six creative ideas with instructions for how to lace sneakers of any kind. Some offer a functional approach, some more stylish, but all of them offer a chance for you to express your individuality. Straight Lacing This style is also called “fashion lacing” or “street lacing” since it’s casual, clean and cool. The loose lacing style gives your foot room to breathe so you can step in style. 1. Lace straight across through the bottom eyelets. Adjust the lace so there’s an equal amount of lace on each side of the bottom of the eyelet. 2. Left lace goes straight up, through the second eyelet, then straight across to the right side second eyelet. Meanwhile, the right lace goes straight up to the third eyelet, then across to the left side third eyelet. 3. Left lace goes up to the fourth eyelet, through and across to the other side. Right lace goes up to the fifth eyelet and across to the other side. 4. Continue in this pattern for the rest of the eyelets. To finish, tie the laces in a bow knot over the tongue, or tuck the bow under the tongue for a clean look. Ladder Lacing This unmistakable design weaves laces together horizontally across the top of the shoe and vertically around each eyelet to create a “ladder.” Originally created for military boots worn by ceremonial guards, this look goes great on shoes with lots of eyelets like the Stan Smith. 1. Lace straight across through the bottom eyelets. Adjust the lace so there’s an equal amount of lace on each side of the bottom of the eyelet. 2. Run each lace up along the outside of the shoe and through the second eyelets. 3. Run the laces across the shoe to the opposite sides, and loop them under the lace on the outside of the shoe. 4. Run the laces up along the outside of the shoe and through the next set of eyelets. Cross them over and loop them under the outside edge lace. Continue in this pattern until the last eyelets, then finish by tying a bow knot. Spider Web Lacing This is the showstopper. The Spider Web is a detailed and intricate lacing technique to stand out on the streets and turn heads. The impressive style weaves an elaborate web with laces going back and forth across the top of the shoe, so follow the steps closely. It’s as complex as it is cool. 1. Lace straight across through the second eyelets, and make sure each end is even. 2. Run each lace down along the outside of the shoe and through the first eyelets. 3. Run each lace up diagonally across the shoe and through the third eyelets, creating an “X” pattern. 4. Now take each lace straight down, wrapping under the lace on the outside of the eyelet directly below. Then take the laces up diagonally across the shoe to the next open eyelet (the fourth eyelet). Repeat this pattern until you reach the top eyelets and tie a knot. Bow Tie Lacing If you want to rock a lacing style that’s more minimalistic, then Bow Tie lacing is the way to go. It hides the laces by running them up the inside of the shoe vertically before crossing them over, creating a loose fit that’s comfortable, casual and stylish. 1. Take the lace straight across and through the bottom eyelets on the outside of the shoe. Adjust the lace so there’s an equal amount of lace on each side of the bottom of the eyelet. 2. For a shoe with an even number of eyelets, thread the laces diagonally across through the second eyelets, creating an “X” on top of the shoe. 3. For a shoe with an odd number of eyelets, run the laces straight up the inside of the shoe through the second eyelets, then diagonally across into the third eyelets, creating an “X” shape. 4. Run the laces straight up the inside of the shoe into the next open eyelet, then cross them diagonally and run them through the outside of the next eyelet up. Continue this pattern until the top of the shoe, then tie a knot to finish. Loop-Back Lacing When you’re rocking Loop-Back Lacing, fancy footwork takes on a whole new meaning. This decorative style loops the laces together straight down the middle of the shoe. It’s the opposite approach of traditional crisscross lacing patterns. To really make the style pop, try thick, round and colorful laces that contrast with the color of the shoe (for example: white laces on black shoes). 1. Take the lace straight across and through the bottom eyelets on the outside of the shoe. Adjust the lace so there’s an equal amount of lace on each side of the bottom of the eyelet. 2. Take each lace diagonally across the shoe, then wrap them around each other in the middle and string them back through the inside of the next open eyelet. Repeat this step by continuing to loop the laces together in the middle and stringing them through the next eyelets. Finish at the top of the shoe with a knot. Missing Laces In this style, the laces are hidden along the inside of the shoe, making it appear as if your shoes are missing laces. The novelty style creates an incredibly loose fit that’s perfect for kicking it with your crew. Just don’t plan on busting a move on the dance floor. 1. Take the lace straight across and through the bottom eyelets on the outside of the shoe. Adjust the lace so there’s an equal amount of lace on each side of the bottom of the eyelet. 2. Run each lace straight up the inside of the shoe to the next eyelet and through, then up the outside of the eyelet and through. Continue stringing them in and out but never crossing over the middle of the shoe. At the top, tie a bow and tuck it behind the tongue. What is the proper way to lace sneakers? There is no right or wrong way to lace your sneakers. The classic way to lace them is by crossing each lace over the other and through each eyelet for a standard criss-cross lacing style. Do you lace sneakers over or under? Lacing over or under each eyelet will yield different looks, which is up to personal preference. Lacing over the eyelets will keep your laces more elevated on the outside of your shoe, and lacing under each eyelet will keep your laces closer to the tongue. How tight should you lace your shoes? How tight you lace your shoes is up to you. For lots of walking, you’ll want a lacing style that keeps your shoes snug to your feet. But for a style where you’re going for looks over functionality, you can opt for a looser lacing style.

JULIANNE ZIMEI Consumer Experience Leader of Originals Flagship NYC @julizimei From an outlet store in Florida to our creative and cultural epicenter on Spring Street, Julianne’s adidas journey began 6 years ago. And when she tells you she made the move for her love of New York streetwear culture and jokes about being buried in her adidas x Danielle Cathari denim jacket, you get the impression Julianne is right where she’s supposed to be. If you only follow trends, what’s your style? She describes her style as being eclectic and versatile, and colleague Bernadette agrees. “Julianne doesn’t dress how you might expect. In fact, he lists helping his team develop as one of his hobbies. Having grown up in humble circumstances, Ariel is used to making the most of whatever he has. And it’s this that seems to have given him a heightened appreciation for the arts, music, sociology, and, of course, his family. City style is about bending the rules. About being creative and making what you have work for you. On the subject of clothes, Ariel credits the harsh realities of inner city living with shaping the New York style landscape. When asked about his own wardrobe, he admits to taking a less-is-more approach, choosing quality materials, classic silhouettes, and essentials that will stand the test of time. He was buying neutrals before they were big because they’re functional and because they play into the idea of longevity. He believes it’s important to be conscious of what we consume. Chatting with Ariel, it’s clear he buys into the campaign color story, but he’s more emotional about what the collaboration represents. “I joined adidas 4 years ago, and I feel like my voice is heard. As a leader, I want to extend that sentiment to my team too. This campaign is testimony to the brand attitude.” BERNADETTE ZUNIGA Retail Professional for Originals Flagship NYC @13ernadette7_ Born and raised in Harlem and poetic and passionate by nature, Bernadette’s style is about having a strong sense of who she is. With ideals as bright and shiny as her statement jewelry, Bernadette isn’t afraid to wear clothes with a message. She is an untiring advocate for both Black Lives Matter and the Stop Asian Hate movement. I don’t want my voice to be lost in whatever I wear. Talking trends and work, Bernadette becomes quite philosophical. She sees trends as inevitable, but not something she feels she has to conform to. “I actually wear a lot of my sister’s old clothes… because I like the design or they make me nostalgic. I wear them whether people think they’re cool or not.” To her, neutrals are not transient—they’re timeless. And they match both her planet-conscious attitude and her favorite earrings. On her free days, Bernadette can be found training for an upcoming duathlon, exploring the city, or spending quality time with her loved ones. She’s also an aspiring DJ and producer. You heard it here first! DARYL JERVIS Consumer Experience Leader of Originals Flagship NYC @styledbydarylj Smile first, outfit second: this is how style master Daryl enters a space. Happiest pairing hype drops with vintage finds, Daryl has a unique dress sense that his colleagues and friends describe as enviable. It's something he says he’s developed from his years working in thrift. I’d describe my style as thrifted, gifted, and fun. When he’s not on the Spring Street shop floor, you’ll find him making music (yes, he sings), working as a freelance wardrobe stylist, hanging out with loved ones, or shopping. It’s clear to see from his headgear and eccentric outfit that clothes are his passion, but when you ask why, you’ll be surprised by his answer. “I’m quite shy and timid, but my clothes can be a talking point. They are the reason I meet lots of cool people.” For Daryl, clothes initiate social connections. When we quiz him on his modeling skills and participating in a global campaign wearing self-styled looks, he laughs. Neutrals are Daryl’s playground. He lives in them, and he’s not afraid to switch up the game. His advice is greens. And layers. You’ve got to make these colors your own. Neutral colors are universally flattering. They transcend culture, race, and everything. AMANDA LUGO Retail Professional for Originals Flagship NYC @stylishviews Young, but notably determined and ambitious, Amanda talks to us with an open heart and shining eyes. This native New Yorker clearly lives and breathes everything her city represents, and if we were looking for someone who truly loves their fashion—well, we’ve found her. My process? Shoes, shirt, then pants. In that order. A self-proclaimed sneakerhead, Amanda builds every outfit from the feet up. She describes her style as unique, and maybe a little flashy. Amanda likes exclusive or limited items and knows how to get her hands on them, a cheeky little skill that “Libra twin” and friend Daryl labels as “a lot of wisdom.” Talking about the recent neutrals shoot reveals Amanda’s more vulnerable side. She was the first on set and admits to being nervous. But the support of her team and the distraction of all the clothes quickly put her at ease. Outside of work, Amanda’s natural curiosity will take her to museums or obscure places in town. We can also confirm that our little energy bomb doesn’t shy away from a good party. Made with Repurposed Plastic Repurposed Plastic targets one of the biggest challenges facing the brand today – reducing the dependency on virgin use plastics and CO2 emissions associated with production. The first solution to this problem was seen in 2015 with the launch of the first adidas x Parley prototype shoe, created from upcycled marine plastic waste and illegal deep-sea gillnets. In the four years since, adidas has built a supply chain for scale and will make 11 million pairs of shoes using Parley Ocean Plastic by the end of 2019, with the goal to use only recycled polyester in products by 2024. Made to be Remade Made to be Remade is the next step, creating a completely circular loop where products won’t end up on beaches or landfills in the first place. Through closed systems, raw materials can be broken down and remade into high performance sportswear, like the adidas by Stella McCartney Infinite Hoodie. Made to Biodegrade This concept is the future-gazing ambition to create a bionic loop where products have the capability of being completely biodegradable and return to the natural ecosystem. Using materials developed from natural resources or made from cells and proteins in a lab, adidas has demonstrated the possibility to create products using materials that are made with nature. This is a step in the brand’s journey to explore innovative solutions that can eventually return to nature. adidas by Stella McCartney Infinite Hoodie The Infinite Hoodie was created with advanced textile innovations company Evrnu and moves towards a future where products can be completely recycled and repurposed. The Infinite Hoodie made from 60% NuCyclTM by Evrnu and 40% organic cotton that has been diverted from landfills. That makes the product 100% recyclable - it can be remade again and again as high-performance product. adidas by Stella McCartney & Bolt Threads Biofabric Tennis Dress This Tennis Dress is a prototype concept incubated in partnership with Bolt Threads, a company that specialises in bioengineered sustainable materials and fibres. The tennis dress is the first of its kind, made with cellulose blended yarn and Microsilk™. This is a protein-based material made with renewable ingredients such as water, sugar, and yeast - which is a step on our journey towards fully biodegradeable products. With the launch of the adidas by Stella McCartney Infinite Hoodie & Tennis Dress, we make the first step towards a more sustainable future without the dependency on virigin plastic. We have committed to use 100% recycled polyester in all products by 2024, and look forward to a future where every adidas product is fully circular.

In Fall/Winter 2019, adidas makes strides in the continued drive to solve the problem of product waste with the introduction of two new apparel innovations within adidas by Stella McCartney.  With the world producing an estimated 101 million tons of textile waste every year, adidas by Stella McCartney collaborates with Evrnu and Bolt Threads to help turn this problem into a more sustainable design solution. The inspiration behind the products is simple: create products that perform not only for the athlete, but also for the world at large. To realize this ambition, adidas is exploring ways to minimize waste through three focus areas:

The new little black dress, tennis skirts have become the “it” item in closets across the globe. From girl bosses to top-tier athletes to your favorite fashion influencer, everyone is loving the timeless and versatile silhouette of the tennis skirt. Depending on how you style them, tennis skirt outfits can add a touch of playfulness, edge and flirty femininity to your looks. Your Serve: Tenniscore x adidas We played dress-up with Portland stylist Kai Magobenny to discover the best ways to style an adidas tennis skirt. From color-blocked and deeply pleated to monochrome and slim-fitting, the adidas tennis skirt catalogue is expansive and can fit any styling aesthetic. "I like that adidas incorporates different materials and structures into their tennis skirts," said Magobenny. "Some are pleated, some are mesh, some have wider waistbands, there's something for everyone." Off to the Farmer’s Market A coquette girl living in a tenniscore world. When you’re off to embrace the flora and food at the farmer’s market, you want to feel light, bright and airy. For a sunny spring day, Magobenny paired a sweat-wicking light pink adidas tennis skirt, made in part with 70% recycled materials, with a fitted white top layered with white and pink bralettes. The branded over the calf socks are asymmetrically layered under varying socks and tights that were cut to create the look. Satin ribbon laces through the sambas and weaves up scrunched knit leg warmers, tying a sweet bow to finish off the look. This look screams soft and airy but also ready to squabble over the last zucchini squash. Note from the Stylist: “Tennis skirts are an ultra-femme statement piece, and sometimes they are begging to be dressed up. The pleating blends perfectly with the other core elements of the Coquette Trend and it's a good starting point you can build up from.” Off to Get the Bag We see you working girl! From taking meetings to filming content for a brand, when girl boss duties call, one must look the part. For this look, Magobenny layered a white adidas Club tennis skirt over a pair of chocolate ribbed and flared pants. When it comes to what top goes best with a tennis skirt the answer is simple, whichever looks best and conveys the vibe you are going for. For this corpore meets tenniscore look, she tucked a white button up shirt into the skirt and threw a black adidas utility vest over it. The chunky earrings and sleek amber-hued frames add a chic touch while the black and white Ozweego OG sneakers remind us that behind every working woman is a top-tier pair of shoes. Note from the Stylist: “Optics are important, but sacrificing style for stoicism isn't the only way to get a job done. Letting your personality come out a little in your aesthetic expression can benefit you wonderfully.” Off to Romanticize Life Do you enjoy solo dates in the city, journaling in the park, and stopping to smell the roses? You may have a case of romanticizing your life—there is no cure, but we have the perfect outfit to go along with it. Magobenny paired a black Aeroready tennis skirt that comes with neon leggings with a purple adidas sports bra and a white adidas Anorak jacket that can be worn off the shoulder or zipped all the way up. Adorned with water bottle holders, lemon-rimmed adi sunglasses and Terrex Free Hiker Gore-tex 2.0 hiking boots, this outfit sings “ready for anything.” The action-ready tennis skirt and leggings duo encourages movement, comfort, and style—because we’ll never make you choose one over the other. Note from the Stylist: “I love the idea of bringing tenniscore to the festy-verse because it's wildly practical AND cute.
