What to Wear for Yoga: Clothes for All Levels

In class or at home, the right yoga clothes offer support, stretch and breathability to enhance your movement. Here’s the adidas guide to what to wear for yoga.

Do you leave it all on the mat during hot yoga, or restore yourself with yin yoga? Or do you prefer the flow of Vinyasa? No matter where or how you practice, your yoga clothes should provide distraction-free comfort when you’re going deep into a pose.

So, if your baggy old sweats aren’t the best choice, what is? Is there is a difference between standard activewear and the best yoga clothes? And what should a guy wear to get down with the Downward Dog? Our adidas guide shows you the most comfortable yoga outfits for your routine.

What to Look for in Yoga Clothes

The ideal outfit for yoga is all about balance: not too tight, not too loose. Your yoga clothes should be fitted enough that they won’t get in the way during tricky poses, but not so tight that they restrict your movement. With innovative features like built-in ventilation and high-performance fabrics that wick away sweat, adidas has yoga wear for every type of practice.

Yoga Tops

Oversized tops are more likely to obstruct your movement or get tangled, especially in floor poses. Instead, opt for either a fitted t-shirt or a form-fitting tank top that will comfortably stay in place and wick away sweat.

When it comes to yoga clothes for men, choose a form-fitting workout tee that will stay close to your body and not ride up like a normal t-shirt would, or opt for a tank top. adidas has a range of men’s yoga shirts and tanks, offering quick-dry fabrics that let your skin breathe to reduce sweating.

Yoga Bras

When it comes to finding the right bra for yoga, you might find you need less compression and more movement than your running bra can give you. Wires and fasteners are generally overkill, and can interfere with your poses. The best yoga bras strike just the right balance of soft and supportive, wicking away sweat and staying in place when you move into a headstand or downward position. For added comfort, choose one that gives you a little personal climate control like the All Me 3-Stripes Bra, which features power mesh to absorb moisture.

Yoga Pants and Leggings

The right yoga leggings, tights, or shorts can provide much-needed flexibility as you stretch into a new pose. Yoga tights and high-waisted leggings are a good choice for dynamic movement, as they offer compression fit and are less likely to slip.

For guys, avoid short shorts, and go for something closer to knee length. Loose-fitting shorts are acceptable; short running shorts aren’t recommended. Men’s yoga shorts are either long and loose, or tight-fitting, to manage heat and wick moisture without restricting your movement. Check out the Alphaskin Sport ¾ tights or sport short tights, which provide a locked-in feel so you can relax into your next pose.

THE BEST YOGA CLOTHES BY YOGA TYPE

What to Wear to Hatha Classes

First-timers or novices will usually be learning Hatha or Vinyasa. Hatha yoga is the easiest introduction, focusing more on light movement, mindfulness, and breathing. Wear comfortable yoga clothes as recommended above, avoiding standard bras, as although it’s not a strenuous activity, the last thing you’ll want is to have underwires and clasps hampering your stretches.

What to Wear to Vinyasa Yoga Classes

Vinyasa is a form of yoga that is more energizing and requires more effort with leg lifting and stretches. The more involved, the more you will need clothes that accommodate the lifts, stretches, and flexibility you’re putting your body through. Choose yoga pants or leggings, a fitted top, and a sports bra, along with supportive trainers.

What to Wear to Yin Yoga

Unlike Vinyasa’s high stretches, Yin is a form of yoga that stretches and works the deep tissues rather than the muscles. A comfortable yoga tank top, leggings, and sports bra will aid you as you work on your alignment and posture.

What to Wear to Hot Yoga

There’s nothing like sweating up a storm to detox the body and expel impurities through your pores. Hot yoga sessions are held in a heated studio environment, meaning you will lose plenty of fluids in the process. When it comes to the right clothes for hot yoga, moisture-wicking fabric is essential for staying cool and dry. Compression shorts like the Alphaskin Short Tights or Alphaskin Sport Short Tights for men are ideal, giving you gentle compression that won’t restrict your movements.

Ready for Your Next Yoga Session?

The final thing you may not have picked up for your yoga class is a yoga mat. A good yoga mat will absorb movement, provide non-slip support, and is easy to carry and store, for classes outside, in a yoga studio or at home. adidas offers a quality yoga mat along with a range of yoga tips to help you go with the flow.
