adidas has unveiled a new type of running shoe that it claims could revolutionise sport - and break the record for the fastest marathon.
The adidas Boost features an all-new material in the sole which can provide huge improvements in the energy returned to a runner.
Made with a type of melted "energy capsule" foam pellets, the material in the sole is both firm and extremely squashy underfoot.
adidas say it will let runners move more efficiently on the road, and allow them to go further for less energy.
The Boost material is also said to be be more resistant to extremes of temperature, and will not change its essential properties whether it's freezing cold or burning hot outside.
A NEW range of extra-springy running shoes could see athletes sprinting 100 metres faster than Usain Bolt.
Adidas yesterday launched £100 trainers based on the breakthrough technology — saying they were TWICE as bouncy as usual.
The soles contain thousands of air capsules that absorb the impact of a foot landing and use the energy to propel it back up. Experts predict Boost shoes could see records tumble in the same way as now-outlawed full-body swimsuits.
Marathon veteran Haile Gebrselassie said at the New York launch: “I put them on and thought, I could be on for another record!” And Jamaican 100m star Yohan Blake told The Sun he hoped the technology will slash times.
The trainers will be on sale in weeks.

Spring is in the air, and as you dig your running kit out of mothballs, adidas has announced a new trainer tech that promises to help you bound through the streets with newfound zeal.
The new Boost's midsole tech looks unerringly like polystyrene, but is actually a new cushioning material that uses hundreds of capsules to provide what Adidas claims is the highest energy return of any running trainer.
Which all sounds like the familiar trill of trainer hype, except we've been using a pair of Boosts to get us through winter training, and they're not half wrong – the Boosts have the most responsive, bouncy ride our feet have had the pleasure of running in.
That might not be to everyone's tastes (hello, barefoot brigade), but the Boosts are a fine neutral trainer whose midsole has another big advantage.
adidas Boost foam is a soft and responsive material that the German company believes will allow runners to run faster for longer distances. It is three times more temperature-resistant than standard EVA material, and provides an improved energy return for runners. The shoe upper is a stretchy, breathable mesh material, which is very comfortable and almost sock-like in its snugness.

Introducing new Boost Technology at a global launch event yesterday, German sportswear giant, adidas hopes to put an extra spring in every runner’s step. The new material promises higher energy returns than anything currently on the market without compromising the comfort of cushioning.
Based on a groundbreaking development process created by adidas partner BASF, the world’s leading chemical company, solid granular material (TPU) is literally blown up and turned into thousands of small energy capsules which make up the footwear’s distinctive midsole. With their unique cell structure, these capsules store and unleash energy more efficiently in every stride.
But what does releasing more energy mean?
BOOST is a groundbreaking innovation in cushioning. It provides more energy return than any other foam cushioning material in the running industry, combining soft comfort with responsive energy for the ultimate running experience. In the heat, in the cold and after countless kilometers, it performs more consistently and doesn’t lose its cushioning properties like standard EVA.
