adidas Originals x Opening Ceremony
Humberto Leon and Carol Lim of New York based Opening Ceremony know how to push the envelope. Known for supporting emerging design talent as well as having an in-house label of its own, the brand has joined forces with adidas Originals to create a premium capsule collection for FW12 that is directional without taking itself too seriously.
How did it come together? “[It] came as a result of both us wanting to celebrate sports through Opening Ceremony’s perspective,” say OC’s co-founders. “It’s an important year of celebration for us as it is both our 10 year anniversary as well as a summer Olympics”.
When adidas Originals approached the duo, they were given a blank slate to work with and asked to interpret what Originals meant to them. Taking influence from swimming and cycling, the range of sporty separates, bathing suits and classic Originals footwear delves into the ‘90s with a bright bandana patchwork print and streetwear silhouettes. Despite hints of the past, it is a contemporary collection thanks to its technical approach.
Many of the pieces are modular: sleek anoraks are reversible from printed to solid fabric, while neoprene parkas feature zipped sleeves and torsos. For the ladies, fabrics play a big part giving a strong sporty influence: body-con dresses in printed neoprene hug curves; pleated nylon mini-skirts are edged in a reflective fabric; and a dry-swim spandex dress goes feminine with its peplum waist.
Menswear features crisp chambray shirting, oversized parkas and a double-faced shearling blazer in reflective black. Although this is a winter collection, bandana speedos will tide the guys over till the end of summer. A formidable selection of footwear for both guys and girls include jelly lace up shoes, jelly sandals, printed boat shoes and a reinterpretation of the classic Samba trainer.
When it comes to this new alliance, there’s strong synergy. “For us, we believe in partnerships that tell an authentic story on why two brands are working together”. Good news– the labels will be teaming up again for another two seasons where we’re no doubt likely to see more standout designs.
The adidas Originals x Opening Ceremony collection will be available at adidas Originals, Opening Ceremony and select premium stores in July and August 2012.
